ADVISORY FOR SUGARCANE MANAGEMENT (Click for Details)

The institute is producing breeder seed of popular and recent release Co varieties at Coimbatore and Karnal. During year 2013-14, at Coimbatore, 111 tonnes seed cane of Co 99004, Co 86032, Co 2001-13, Co 2001-15 and Co 0403 were produced and 95 tonnes were distributed to sugar factories and farmers of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. About 16 tonnes of seed cane was provided for Frontline demonstration, Technology park and bud chip seedlings production.

During October 2013 the tropical sugarcane varieties Co 06027, Co 06030, Co 0403, Co 99004, Co 99006, Co 86032, Co 2001-13 and Co 2001-15 were planted in 2.0 acres. The newly notified varieties Co 06027 for Peninsular zone and Co 06030 for East coast zone were introduced in the seed chain.

Seedling nurseries were raised using bud chips of varieties Co 99006 and Co 86032 in seedling trays and about 19,000 transplants were distributed.

A training programme on ‘Seed technologies for tribal farmers’ of Sadivayal region, Siruvani, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu was organized under Tribal Sub plan of ICAR Seed Project. The training included lectures by scientists of Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, persons from Department of Horticulture and team leaders of ‘Pudhu Vaazhvu Thittam’ (New Life Programme of State Government), demonstration of techniques, technologies, modern equipments, field visits followed by distribution of seeds of seasonal crops, farm implements and manure. More than one hundred tribal farmers and their family members participated in the programme.

Tissue-culture plants/ seedings

Virus free tissue culture plants were produced by meristem culture in sugarcane varieties Co 86032, Co 0403, CoV 95101, CoA 04-082, Co 7219 and Co 6907. More than 33,000 tissue culture plants were supplied to sugar factories and progressive farmers in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and 50 mother culture flasks of Co 86032 was also supplied.

At Regional Centre Karnal, Breeder seed of seven sugarcane varieties namely, Co 98014, Co 0118, Co 0124, Co 0237, Co 0238, Co 05009 and Co 05011 were raised in about 10 acres. The total quantity of seed cane produced was 331 tonnes of which 176.37 t seeds were sold to farmers and sugar mills for autumn season planting and 124.52 t seed cane was sold for spring planting.
