Pride of ICAR-SBI-Former Director,Dr. Bakshi Ram gets Padma Shri award

Sugarcane Breeding Institute offers a number of training programmes every year for the benefit of cane development personnel of sugar factories, officers deputed by different state governements and farmers sponsored by sugar factories. Two types of training courses viz., "Model training course in recent advances in sugarcane production technology" and "National level training on Sugarcane Production Technologies" cater to the needs of cane development workers and other officials of state governments. These training programmes are sponsered by Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India and are coordinated by the Extension Section of this Institute. Training programmes to farmers are imparted based on specific needs.

A national level training on 'Scientific sugarcane cultivation' sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India is being held at ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute during August - October 2015 in 5 batches.

The participants are middle level cane development officials from six states viz., Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The training comprising lectures, field visits and laboratory visits aims to equip the cane development personnel of the country with the latest technologies.

The First Batch of the training (Aug 26-27, 2015) was inaugurated by Dr Bakshi Ram, Director, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore. He gave a glimpse of sugarcane and sugar scenario in the country. He reiterated the importance of sugarcane varieties produced by Sugarcane Breeding Institute in ushering a sweet revolution in the country. The replacement of the variety Co 86032 with new sugarcane varieties like Co 99006, Co 99004, Co 0403 and Co 0212 was reiterated.

Apart from extention-type training programmes, the Institute conducts training programmes on advanced scientific topics to researchers working under the National Agricultural Research System (NARS). They are offered as either Short-term Courses or as Winter / Summer Schools. These type of training programmes are sponsored by the ICAR from time to time.

The Institute has offered International Training Programmes also to sugarcane researchers of other countries.
