Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, India, one of the pioneering breeding institutes in the world was established in 1912, with the main objective of evolving superior varieties of sugarcane suitable for various agro climatic zones in India.

The Institute is located at Coimbatore (77oE longitude and 11oN latitude) in Southern India on the leeward side of Western Ghats at 427 metres above mean sea level.

The location is well suited for sugarcane breeding as the climate favours natural flowering of sugarcane and good seed set.

The Institute, which was formerly under Government of India became part of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research on April 1, 1969.
