Statistics-Economics

The Section is headed by Dr.P.Murali, Principal Scientist (Agrl. Economics)

♥ The Statistics section was established in 1976 to cater to the needs of scientists in analyzing their experimental data, and in laying out field experiments based on statistical principles.

♥ The section has undertaken periodical studies in refinement of experimental techniques for sugarcane field trials. The section is also maintaining computer based databases of sugarcane genetic resources and an application software “GRINS” (Genetic Resource Information System) was developed for the management of these databases. Core collections of S. officinarum and S. spontaneum germplasm using various measures of diversity were also developed by the section.

♥ The Section also caters to the needs of scientists by developing computer programs for need-based statistical analysis supplemented by statistical packages like SPSS and SYSTAT and SAS for routine data analysis. Support to the Administrative section is provided by developing computer programs for PAYROLL, WAGE BILL and related applications.

Agricultural Economics

The Economics section was established in 2008 and studies on the evaluation of technical efficiency of sugarcane farms vis-a-vis cost of cultivation in the country has been undertaken. Subsequently, impact of variety Co 86032 was studied. The study has estimated that variety Co 86032 has significantly improved cane yield and sugar recovery in the Tropical India.

There is one major program of research (with 3 projects) under the Economics-Statistics section. Three sub projects namely

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SUGARCANE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AND SUGAR INDUSTRY

A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF RECOMMENDED SUGARCANE PRODUCTION AND PROTECTION TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROMOTING RURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF ICAR-SBI VARIETIES AND PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES IN DIFFERENT AGRO-CLIMATIC ZONES OF INDIA

The Economics Section coordinates with the Extension Section to study the economic impact of sugarcane varieties released from this institute and other improved package of practices.

Programme 4-1 & 4-2
